The Love of Neighbor Project is more than just a nonprofit; it is a lifeline for those on the margins, a beacon of hope for those trying to rebuild their lives, and a sanctuary for families seeking community and compassion. Founded in the heart of Newark, New Jersey, and deeply connected to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Love of Neighbor Project is rooted in the Catholic faith and devoted to the service of all.
The Love of Neighbor Project was born from the vision of Father Bismarck Chau, whose deep faith and compassion inspired a movement to serve Newark’s most vulnerable. Rooted in the Gospel’s call to love one another, he believed that true faith is expressed through action—by meeting people where they are and addressing their needs with dignity and care.
With his leadership, we set out to create a space where love becomes tangible: feeding the hungry, clothing those in need, and supporting individuals as they rebuild their lives. This project is a testament to the belief that when we care for our neighbors, we bring hope and healing to our entire community.
At the heart of the Love of Neighbor Project is a simple yet profound goal: to meet the needs of our neighbors in practical, meaningful ways. Through partnerships with local organizations, we serve those facing overwhelming challenges—like individuals reentering society after incarceration.
These neighbors face countless barriers, but small acts of kindness can make all the difference. That’s why we provide:
For many, these gestures are not just resources; they are a lifeline, a reminder that someone believes in them and their ability to move forward.
We dream of a Newark where every person is met with dignity, where no one goes hungry, and where barriers to success are broken down with love and support. Inspired by Catholic values but open to all, we aim to foster a culture of generosity and hope. Together, we believe we can create a stronger, more compassionate community.
Our mission is lived out every month through initiatives like the Bread From Heaven Food Exchange, held every 3rd Sunday at the Cathedral Basilica of Sacred Heart. This program provides food for those in need while inviting others to share their abundance.
From food exchanges to holiday gift drives, we aim to make giving easy and meaningful, ensuring that every act of kindness leaves a lasting impact on those we serve.
To sustain and grow our mission, we’ve launched a Capital Campaign to fund critical projects like the women’s sober home, reentry support programs, and a future brick-and-mortar space. This space will include a cafe staffed by individuals in recovery and reentry, providing them with job opportunities and a fresh start.
These projects are more than just programs—they are lifelines, offering hope, stability, and a path forward for so many in our community.
In the spirit of expanding our reach, we are committed to building a women’s sober home. This safe haven will offer women in recovery the chance to heal, rebuild, and thrive. It’s more than a house—it’s a place of transformation, where women can reclaim their lives and build a brighter future.
Our volunteers are the heart and soul of the Love of Neighbor Project. Their time, energy, and compassion fuel everything we do. From organizing drives to serving at events, they embody the very spirit of love and generosity that defines our mission.
To every volunteer: thank you for being the hands and feet of Christ in our community. Your work changes lives, and we are forever grateful.
Your support means everything. Whether through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, you are an essential part of this mission. Together, we can honor Father Bismarck’s vision and continue to bring hope, dignity, and love to our neighbors in Newark. The Love of Neighbor Project is not just a charity—it’s a movement, a testament to what can happen when we see each other as family and treat one another with the respect and compassion we all deserve. As we look to the future, we invite you to join us—stand with us as we build a brighter, more compassionate Newark, one step, one meal, one job, and one second chance at a time.
Join the Love of Neighbor Project! Volunteer your time to empower lives and build a stronger community. Together, we create positive change! ❤️
