The Love of Neighbor Project is more than just a nonprofit; it is a lifeline for those on the margins, a beacon of hope for those trying to rebuild their lives, and a sanctuary for families seeking community and compassion. Founded in the heart of Newark, New Jersey, and deeply connected to the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, the Love of Neighbor Project is rooted in the Catholic faith and devoted to the service of all.
Our story began with a simple but profound belief: that everyone deserves a second chance and that true transformation is possible when we come together to support each other. We are dedicated to meeting the needs of our neighbors in practical, tangible ways. Through partnerships with local organizations, In example, the reentry population, individuals stepping back into society after incarceration, who face countless barriers to rebuilding their lives. We provide clothing for job interviews, bus and train tickets to make it to appointments, and food gift cards to ensure no one goes hungry. For many, these small acts are the difference between giving up and finding the strength to continue.
Each month, on the third Sunday, our food exchange program brings the community together in a unique and powerful way. Families drop off non-perishable food items at the Cathedral, and those in need can take what they require — no questions asked. This live food exchange embodies our philosophy: dignity, respect, and support are the foundation of true charity. There is no judgment, only the understanding that each of us, at some point, may need a helping hand.
Our vision doesn’t stop there. We aspire to open a brick-and-mortar community space that will serve as a cafe and coffee shop, where those in our reentry and recovery programs can find meaningful work. By offering employment and training to individuals transitioning back into society, we can help restore a sense of purpose and belonging. This space will be a haven, a place where people from all walks of life come together, learn from one another, and, most importantly, become family.
And while we work tirelessly to address immediate needs, we also look to the future. There is a critical shortage of women’s sober homes in our community — safe places where women in recovery can find stability, support, and resources for long-term healing. The Love of Neighbor Project is committed to raising awareness and funding to build such a home, where women can find the hope and structure they need to rebuild their lives.
Every step of our journey has been guided by our faith and by the belief that love and service are inseparable. Our incredible volunteers and supporters embody this mission, donating time, clothing, food, and resources to help our neighbors.
We have seen lives change, families reunited, and hearts healed, not because of any one person but because of the collective power of a community that truly cares.
The Love of Neighbor Project is not just a charity. It’s a movement, a testament to what can happen when we see each other as family and treat each other with the respect and compassion we all deserve. As we look to the future, we invite others to join us — to stand alongside us as we build a brighter, more compassionate Newark, one step, one meal, one job, and one second chance at a time.
Join us in empowering individuals and communities through your generous time to Love of Neighbor Project. Together, we can create positive change!
